With 1,188 farms, agriculture
remains the key to Glenn County's economy. Its major commodities are rice,
almonds, milk products, prunes and livestock. The county's total farm
production value was $263,854,000 in 1996. Although that total ranks only
22nd in the state, 28% of the agriculture-related industries employ 28 %
of the work force in Glenn County as opposed to 1.8% in Southern
California. Glenn County's population in 1996 numbered 26,700.
Manufacturing jobs in the
county are relatively significant, constituting 19 % of local employment.
A substantial portion of these are in food processing such as the Dole Nut
Company or the Holly Sugar Company. Non-food manufacturers include
Schuller International's Manville Building Insulation (500 employees) and
the soft luggage/recreational equipment manufacturer Applied Sewing
Resources (100 employees).
With an 18 percent
unemployment rate, county has gone through a self-examination period
during which the pros and cons of diversifying away from agriculture were
weighed. The general consensus that has emerged is that Glenn is a
fundamentally agriculture-based economy, but it should develop related
value-adding industries such as food processing and distribution.
