Agriculture is the base of the
King's County economy. The value of the county's agricultural output was
$883,887,000 (1996), making it eleventh in the state.
The five leading
commodities were milk, cotton products, and turkeys. Over 25% of the
county's jobs are in agricultural production and services. Additionally, 6
of the top 8 manufacturing employers are in food or fiber processing.
Their products include onions, garlic, cotton bales, tomatoes, and cheese.
Government is a major
employer in the county with over one quarter of total jobs. Two state
prisons at Avenal and Corcoran currently employ 2,775 people, and a third
prison is slated for construction. Lemoore Naval Air Station has some 600
civilian employees and is the largest master jet Naval Air Station in the
world.
Due to the seasonal nature
of agriculture dependent industries, Kings County consistently has a
markedly higher unemployment rate than the state as a whole.
