With a sales value exceeding
$1 billion, agriculture is Merced County's primary industry. Production
agriculture produces over 65 products and employs 21 percent of the
county's residents.
When food processing is
included, agriculture employs 33 percent of the workforce, making it the
county's largest employer. Approximately 77 percent of the county's
acreage is in agriculture.
Planning is currently under
way for the construction of the University of California at Merced, the
University of California's tenth campus. Slated to open its doors in 2005,
by 2035, the new campus will have a student enrollment of 19,000.

Merced's 20-year population
is expected to increase to from 198,400 (1996) to 380,100 by 2020.
