| Sacramento County
lies in the heart of the richest agricultural region in the world. Although
the County is rapidly urbanizing, its agricultural output contributes
$244,416,000 (1996) to the local economy.
The county is also home to
California's state capital, the city of Sacramento. The city's job base is
nearly twice as concentrated in state and local government jobs as the
average metropolitan area, and government jobs account for 30 percent of all
non farm jobs.
The region has also become a
favored location for back office and data processing operations. Accordingly
the finance, insurance, and real estate sector grew 90.4% between 1980 and
1995 as it shrunk everywhere else in the nation.
Sacramento's most salient
success story has been its development as a viable in-state location for
high-tech manufacturing. The dominant products are personal computers, and
computer chips for companies such as Apple Computer and Hewlett-Packard.
Total high-technology employment is over 17,000 (1996).
