Solano County is a Bay Area
county, a Delta County, and a Sacramento Valley county. A member of the
Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) It has been the fastest-growing
of the nine Bay Area counties for some times. With the lowest average
housing prices in the Bay Area, ($155,000 - 1995), the county's population
is projected to grow from 372,400 (1996) to 564,900 (2020).
The county has been the
beneficiary of a trend for companies to move some or most of their
operations to less-populated, yet readily accessible communities away from
corporate urban headquarters. These companies include WestAmerica Bank in
Fairfield, United Airlines' reservation center in Suisun City, and the
Vacaville distribution centers of Lucky's Supermarkets, Royal Cathay, and
Moore Business Forms.
A remarkable success for
the county has been the development of a "Life Sciences
Corridor" for progressive biotech companies and support services.
Including companies such as Genentech, Calgene, and Alza the county is
home to 16 biotech companies with 1,670 employees.
