Agriculture and food
processing continue to play an important role in Stanislaus County's
economy. As one of the few San Joaquin Valley counties with an
agricultural element in its general plan, the $1.23 billion (1996)
agricultural value contribution made the by the county's ag industry is
felt throughout all sectors of the local economy. The stated local policy
has been to direct development away from the productive agricultural soils
on the Valley floor and preferably to its cities rather than to
unincorporated areas.
Its five leading
commodities are milk, almonds, chickens, turkeys, and walnuts. The world's
largest wine company, E & J Gallo, is located in the county's major
city, Modesto.
