Tulare County prides itself on
being a region of planned economic growth. While population, employment,
and per capita income have increased steadily since 1980, the county has
been able to effectively balance population growth with the region's $2.8
billion (1996) agricultural economy. Local food processing has an economic
value to the area of over $1.5 billion.
Growth in the county has
developed largely due to new manufacturing operations. Various national
companies have located food processing operations here to take advantage
of their proximity to the 250 crops produced here.
Major cities include
Visalia, Tulare, and Porterville. The county's population is expected to
increase from 353,600 (1996) to 612,000 by 2020.
